The Five Most Commonly Asked Questions About E-Cigarettes

Question 1How Does an Electronic Cigarette Work?

Answer – Electronic cigarettes, also called e-cigarettes, ecigs, or personal vaporizers are a popular smoking alternative where the user inhales a vapor that looks like smoke, but is instead a water-vapor mist.

The vapor is created when the user, (known as a vaper) takes a puff, activating a battery which heats up a heating element called an atomizer . It doesn’t take much heat to turn the liquid (located in the ecigarette’s cartridge or tank), into a water vapor cloud.

Electronic cigarette styles vary from those that look like a real cigarette, (called a cig-alike), to a wide variety of personal vaporizers that come in many shapes and sizes. They all work in the same way, but personal vaporizers have refillable tanks that hold the “e-liquid”.  Some vapers prefer this feature as they can choose from hundreds of e-liquid flavors now available. Others choose the pre-filled cig-alike or pod vape pen models for their ease of use and portability.

Of course, not unlike automobiles, e-cigarette performance varies with styles and manufacturers.

Studies Show E-Cigarettes Are Not a Gateway to SmokingQuestion 2Which E-cigarette Tastes the Most Like a Real Cigarette?

Answer – There is NO e-cigarette exactly like a tobacco cigarette. There are as many differences as there are similarities,… but if you find the right ecig for your taste preferences, you may never smoke again.

Successful vapers (those who now smoke ecigs instead of real cigarettes) say it doesn’t matter what it looks like or whether the flavor is just like burning tobacco; what matters is the quality and performance of the e-cigarette, and the realization that the product produces a enjoyable experience that satisfies like a cigarette.

Question 3  How Much Nicotine Do I Need in An E-cigarette in Order to Satisfy My Nicotine Cravings?

Why do Vapers Like Zero Nicotine Vaping?

Answer – When you order an e-cigarette or e-liquid, you can choose your preferred level of nicotine. Recent surveys indicate that a pack per day smoker would be best served by an 18 mg to 24 mg nicotine level.

If you’re used to smoking a light cigarette, or if you are using an advanced Sub-ohm atomizer in your ecig, you probably won’t need more than 12mgs.

That said…the nicotine delivery in e-cigarettes differs from regular cigarettes!

The nicotine in a real cigarette is power-charged with tobacco additives such as ammonia and tar that speed the nicotine to your brain within seconds. Since ecigs do not contain those toxic chemicals, the delivery is a bit slower….not such a bad trade off.

IMPORTANT! According to the CDC, you only absorb about 0.95 mg of the average 12 mgs of nicotine inhaled when you smoke a cigarette. The percentage of nicotine you actually absorb with e-cigarettes is still being debated. That’s because all e-cigarettes are not created equal!

The amount of nicotine you are ingesting will vary by product, as does the quality and safety standards of e-cigarette hardware and e-liquids.

If you want your e-cigarette to vaporize nicotine efficiently; if you want your ecigarette to satisfy like a real cigarette, you need to become an educated consumer.

  • Don’t buy e-cigarettes manufactured by tobacco companies. They are designed to be inferior products for obvious reasons.
  • Don’t buy ecigs from convenience stores or gas stations. They carry the worst brands. Some have been flagged as factory seconds.
  • Buy from reputable companies and never buy cheap ecigs or e-liquids!

Regarding e-liquids, choose brands that rely on FDA and FEMA laboratory lab standards and utilize only high grade ingredients blended by professionals. Don’t expect to get the correct amount of nicotine if your e-liquid is mixed by a vapor shop employee.

Question 4Are E-Cigarettes Safe?

Answer –  E-cigarettes contain nicotine which is an addictive substance. The pubic has many questions about the seriousness of nicotine addiction, and there is still a huge debate over its safety. What we do know is that e-cigarette vapor is 99% safer than tobacco smoke.

Here Are Some Facts that Will Help to Answer Other Questions about Vaping Safety:

  • E-cigarettes do NOT contain antifreeze.
  • E-cigarettes are not AS dangerous or MORE dangerous than tobacco cigarettes.
  • Research by the FDA and independent researchers show that e-cigs are no more likely to cause cancer than FDA-approved nicotine gums, patches or lozenges.

Question 5 – Some News Reports Say E-cigarettes are Dangerous. Why Should I Bother Switching to an Equally Risky Product?

Answer – FDA Commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb has called for new tobacco regulations that take a broader acceptance of electronic cigarettes. In an Oct. 2017 interview with the Washington Post he made this statement:

New products and innovations have the potential to be a lot less harmful than combustable tobacco. We need to provide an alternative for adults who still want to get access to nicotine and electronic nicotine delivery systems, of which e-cigarettes are a primary component.

According to CASAA (The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association):

The reports that there are studies that show potential health risks due to e-cigarette use are premature.  In spite of what has been reported, the studies done to date have not only been largely inconclusive, but have actually found that the levels of contaminants detected in e-cigarette liquid and vapor are so low that it is highly doubtful they would even pose a health risk. Most certainly, they are thousands of times less of a risk than continuing to smoke. The fact is, the mere “detection” of a chemical does not mean that a product is hazardous. Every day we harmlessly consume and breathe in chemicals that would be toxic at much higher levels. It is disingenuous for public health organizations that disapprove of e-cigarettes to point to the trace levels found in e-cigarette studies as conclusive evidence of a potential health risk.

Electronic Cigarettes are proving to be an effective alternative to smoking.  They are more effective than nicotine patches, gums and other drugs. Because the industry is growing so quickly, powerful competitors and political factions invested in the pharmaceutical and tobacco industries are now threatened.

It’s been said that if e-cigarettes were invented by a pharmaceutical company they would be hailed as a “medical miracle” rather than a threat to public health.
